Field Day 2018 began on a hot Friday afternoon over at our shed, loading went quickly and we headed off to In-N-Out Burger for lunch. After lunch we met at the Padre Dam irrigation district admin building where we set up for Field Day.
Setup took place over the remaining part of Friday and continued Saturday morning. A few things had to be redone, which is okay considering we have a few new members helping out this year. When 11:00 AM came around we were all ready.
Field Day itself went well from all accounts; our score is down from previous years. This appears to be due to a number of factors, with our position in the 11 year sun spot cycle being the dominant of those factors.
Some problems were experienced in both the setup and teardown. Aging belts on the tower trailer made raising the tower to full height not possible, we made it to about 75’ or thereabouts. Issues with the tower’s rigging also came up that have to be addressed before it’s next use. There also, are a host of smaller issues that need to be dealt with.
We did make 312 contacts total, 298 of which were Phone contacts, and 14 were Digital mode contacts. We made no CW contacts this year. We did make WAS, or came very close to it as I understand it.
All in all it was a good Field Day, the food was good. Someone kept feeding bacon in spite of the fact I decided to go on a diet (and tell nobody). We were in good company and a good time was had by all. Hope to see you next year.

The Objective of Field Day:

To work as many stations as possible on any and all amateur bands (excluding the 60, 30, 17, and 12-meter bands) and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. Field Day is open to all amateurs in the areas covered by the ARRL/RAC Field Organizations and countries within IARU Region 2. DX stations residing in other regions may be contacted for credit, but are not eligible to submit entries.
